When Inspiration Isn’t Enough
Dearest gentle writer,
How long has it been since this author regaled you with your own woes?
You shall have to pardon my being away on BookTube instead of having my quills busy away when it’s all you pay me to do! Ha!
For the crux of the matter, I imagine you’ve been here before, in this instance:
A surge of ideas, a rush of excitement, and a story screaming to be told floods your mind. Your heart races. Your fingers itch to write. The thrill of creation makes you feel unstoppable.
And yet… three days later, that same story or article sits untouched. The excitement has dulled. And now even, the idea feels… heavier, almost like a burden. Inspiration has left the room, and suddenly, nothing seems worth the effort.
I believe you and ninety-nine others have named this stage, the Writer’s Block.
Here’s the thing, dearest writer, and I want you to pay attention:
Inspiration is not the engine. It is but a spark, and sparks, dearest writer, cannot alone build bridges, castles, or worlds. They flicker. They fade.
What carries a story from idea to finished work is patience, discipline, and deliberate attention. Moreover, it is showing up when the thrill is gone. It is sitting with a paragraph that frustrates you. It is returning the draft you want to abandon because the sentences feel clumsy, the dialogue feels stiff, or the chapter feels empty.
I’ve watched writers with less raw talent than others produce books that last, and God no! This is not because they were perpetually inspired. They only did what the 1% do.
They returned again and again, when the excitement had left. That’s where craft lives. That’s where magic meets method. And this applies to EVERY area in your life.
Your relationship feels boring? Choose that person again and again, even when there are “better” alternatives.
You are supposed to work out but feel unmotivated? Begin immediately with a jumping Jack.
This is not to say rest is not important. It is only to drive the fact that rest is all we ever do, in a very ironic sense. So why not choose something different today, really?
And when inspiration deserts you — as it always will — do not despair. Keep writing anyway. Not for applause. Not for validation. Not for the fleeting thrill.
Write because the work is asking you to. Because each line completed when it feels hard is a line that inches your story closer to being alive in the world.
Write because you have a goal that will not fulfil itself.
Inspiration is a visitor. Patience is a tenant. Dearest landlord, make room for both.
And remember: the stories that endure are rarely born in a single burst of genius. They are forged in the steady, quiet attention of someone who simply shows up, again and again, even when showing up seems pointless.
