Sacrificing.

Believing that if you keep your head down and do what’s right, everything will eventually be okay.

Then one day…

…you find out everything you’ve ever believed — all your sacrifices, all your labouring, EVERYTHING! — was a lie.

Not half the truth.

Not a misunderstanding.

A lie.

That’s the kind of story Red Rising tells.

Yup, this is a book review.

When I started reading it, I genuinely thought, “This book is definitely overhyped.”

Then, somewhere in the middle, I started asking, “Wait… what’s actually happening here?”

By the end, I was wondering why nobody warned me.

I honestly feel like somebody kidnapped The Hunger Games, forced it to marry Ender’s Game, and somehow their child turned out even crazier.

Pardon my Red Rising language, but this book is gorydamn good.

Before reading it, I thought it was one of those science fiction fantasy books.

Nope.

This is raw science fiction.

It’s set on Mars, where humanity has evolved — or maybe devolved — into a civilisation divided by genetically engineered Colours. Reds sit at the very bottom of society, while Golds rule everyone else like they’re born to own the universe. Literally.

I won’t tell you anything beyond that because discovering this world is half the fun.

And trust me, there are moments in this book that made me stop reading just to process what I’d learnt.

Books like this remind me why I fell in love with science fiction in the first place.

So yes.

Red Rising lives up to the hype.
